Introducing The New Htc Desire – A Nexus Clone With Sense

HTC has done it again to embarrass the big five with a definitive Android smartphone it announced at the recent Mobile World Congress.  This time, it’s a confirmation of the rumored HTC Bravo which is now officially the HTC Desire.  The more tech savvy members of the mobile phone community have been quick to spot the uncanny affinity of the Desire with the Google Nexus One for which HTC was the OEM, abandoning the HTC Passion to become the Nexus One.

It’s not surprising that the two gets some comparative discussions in online mobile sites but at the end of the day, either smartphones are exquisite Android specimens that define how an upscale smartphone should be.

Upscale Smartphone Features

The new Desire is 3G phone on the dual band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (900/2100) and a quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) EDGE/GPRS phone on 2G. You get WiFi 802.11 for hotspot surfing, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR for wireless high speed data transfers with other Bluetooth devices and microUSB 2.0 for wired data synching. There’s SatNav functionality supported by a built-in A-GPS receiver with Digital Compass.

You get a stylishly elegant touchscreen body measuring 119 x 60 x 11.9mm and weighing 135g.  It has a stunning 3.7-inch Wide-VGA (480 x 800) AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with multitouch input, 16 million colors, a gravity accelerometer, a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor.

Imaging features a 5.0 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and D1 (720 x 480) video recording at 30 fps as well as  geo-tagging. Entertainment is served with capable media players for popular audio and video codecs,  stereo FM radio with RDS, 3.5mm headphone jack and Bluetooth A2DP support.

Phone memory consists of a 512 MB flash ROM and 576 MB RAM with unlimited phonebook and call record entries. It’s expandable to 32 GB with its microSD slot.  You get a 1600 mAh Li-Ion battery that can deliver up to 6.6 hours of talk time on 2G and up to 340 hours in standby mode on a single charge.

As an Android handset, you get access to the Android app store with  more than 16,000 downloadable applications for games, office and media content. You get Adobe Flash 10.1 on its HTML browser and social networking activity gets centered on the HTC SNS feature called Friend Stream that allows tracking of updates across all your favorite social networking sites like Facebook, Flickr and Twitter as well as enables broadcasting of single message posts to all your friends across these sites.

Availability

HTC announced that the new HTC Desire is scheduled to ship April in the UK and European markets.  Virtually all the major carriers have expressed keen interest in offering the smartphone with little competition from the big five. It looks like HTC has a sure winner for 2010. No official word on its pricing but there are already websites publishing some prices and carrier plans.  Expansys and Amazon UK show a ₤440 SIM-free price and Vodafone though the Omio site offers it for free on an 18-month plan using Vodafone with 600 free call minutes and unlimited text for ₤35/month.
